Some might call this guitar boring. It’s certainly understated, but this guitar is a beauty and a beast! (video inside)
Some people love the looks and some people just don’t. A black Strat with a maple neck. It’s utilitarian, the opposite of flamboyant and “Showbiz”, but there is something about a black Strat. I used to find them boring and bland looking – the last thing I wanted to be seen playing, but these days I feel the opposite way. Maybe it’s an appreciation that changes with age.
I’m still not keen on black Strats with a rosewood fingerboard, but with the maple, just like with old Telecasters, this look just screams “The Daddy” to me. A black Strat doesn’t have anything to prove now, it’s already done that thousands of times over.
With that in mind I decided I wanted one and as it happened I had the right parts available. What I love about this one is the fact that it started off beaten up. Both the neck and the body had already suffered much abuse and a few injuries, so they just make the finished guitar look like it’s already had an exciting rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
There’s nothing special about any of the parts of this guitar; all cheap parts, pickups etc. but the sum of the parts is great and I love how it sounds too, especially with my preferred wiring for an SSS format guitar:
- 3-way switch: Bridge, Bridge+Neck, Neck
- Master volume & tone
- 3-way rotary switch to add middle pickup or select middle pickup only
It looks, sounds and plays the part and will no doubt make it onto the stage before too long.
